World Book Day 2020

World Book Day 2020

This year to celebrate World Book day we decided to delve deeper into our Story Session book 'The Tale of Troy' by Roger Lancelyn Green. We held a talk show and pupils took it in turns to become  a presenter, audience member or one of the main characters from the story - Paris, Hectors, Achilles, Menleaus or Agamommon - just some the key characters from the 10 year war!

The challenge was to step into the character's shoes to answers the questions provided by the audience. Pupils has to use their infererence skills to discover the charcters feelings, thoughts and motives. Pupils were also encouraged to use quotes from the text to provide evidence to support and justify their answers.

'It really brought the book to life for me. I have really enjoyed reading The Tale of Troy and making links to our history sessions but this really helped me to understand the different characters and the reasons they behaved the way they did!' Baily H.

'I enjoyed this activity because we got into a debate about which character we thought was the most noble and which character we would most like to be. My friends all had such different opinions and it showed me new view points that I hadn't considered' Rachael D.

We also looked at writing a Tanka poem to show our understanding of 'Journey' by Aaron Becker. We used the Tanka structure of 5 lines each with a set amount of syllables - 5 – 7 – 5 – 7 – 7, to write a poem which described how the girl's emotions changed througout the poem.

'This was really challenging to start with as we had to stick to the set pattern something that I had not done before. I used my knowledge of syllables from music lessons and the theausus to find alternative words to stick to the pattern. I was really please that I managed to achieve a Tanka and enjoyed reading my final poem to the class.' Lily W
