11/06/2018 - HMRC Tax Workshops

Today, each class was visited by two people who work for HMRC. They taught the children all about what tax is, who pays tax and what our taxes go towards.

"Did you know that many years ago people had to pay taxes for their windows? This caused many people (who couldn't afford to pay it) to brick their windows up. Unfortunately, many illnesses started to spread. Have you ever heard of people talking about 'daylight robbery'? Well, this is where that quote comes from!" - Ben W, Class 7

"Many treats that we enjoy e.g. biscuits and sweets are taxed. However, it came as a surprise to us that cakes are classed as 'essentials', which means that you don't have to pay any tax for them! This caused HMRC to take the bosses who make 'Jaffa Cakes' to court three times because they class them as biscuits. McVitie's brought a giant jaffa cake to court and left it out for three days. The judge felt it and because it had gone hard, they declared that 'Jaffa Cakes' are indeed cakes!" - Lola M, Class 7
