11/04/2018 - Year 5 Art: Self-Portraits

This week, Class 9 and Class 10 have been practising their art skills with Becky, our fantastic visiting artist. The children had to complete self-portraits using a mirror to try and draw as accurately as possible. Children used a range of different pencils for their drawings, such as a 2B pencil for the outlines of their face and a 9B pencil for their hair.

First, pupils were given an oval  shape and they drew lines to show where they should draw each feature of their face. Next, pupils looked at the work of the artist Hans Holbein the Younger, who drew self-portraits of very rich members of society. The children then practised making light marks on the page and drawing each feature of their face: nose, eyes, mouth and hair. They even had to practise drawing these features without looking at the page!

Finally, pupils put all the skills they had been practising together to complete a self-portrait. The finished work was excellent and Becky was very impressed. Hans Holbein, you’ve got competition!
