Reading great books inspires us to write..

School Library

In Year 6, 'Pupil Librarians' are on hand to offer information and advice to ensure that everybody chooses a book that is both enjoyable and challenging. Children are encouraged to look at the front cover and read the blurb on the back of the book to check that it is something they wish to read. All books are organised alphabetically, and we scan the bar code on each cover when a pupil borrows a book. In mirroring a public library, it is anticipated that our children will have the confidence to access and utilise their own local library, fostering a lifelong love of reading.

Pupil Reads - creating independent readers

Sometimes in Year 6, we go to the library for our 'Pupil Reads' sessions. We all enjoy relocating from the classroom and savouring the peaceful atmosphere of our school library.

World Book Day

As part of our World Book Day celebrations, we independently analysed some of the covers of our favourite books. We thought about:

  • What is it about the design that entices people to pick it up?
  • What does the phrase, 'Shelf appeal' mean?
  • What inferences can we make from the front cover?

An enjoyable lesson which provided us with lots of ideas and inspiration for our own front covers...
